I have a fetish for good outdoor jackets.
How is it possible that something this cheap is so good?
I needed a new jacket to satisfy my jacket fetish. With money being tight I thought I’d give the Helikon Jackal Soft Shell a try. Having never purchased any of their products I thought it would be worth a bash and ideal for work. So while you’ll see that this jacket has a quick release for a sidearm that may attract the covert operative or more likely the BB loony, it’s real appeal is a surprising blend of good features.
For starters it’s around £37, normally prices like this raise alarm bells but you’ll be amazed at the value for money presented here. The jacket has pockets everywhere which for me is good, everything I carry should have it’s home. I want to have my kit in separate pockets so I can easily find them in an emergency. One chest pocket on the left side with headphones port, Two lower pockets, Two shoulder pockets, Two inner chest pockets, Two inner lower pockets. I think you’ll agree that’s plenty of pockets, the inner chest fits an iPad mini in terms of size.
Durable and Warm
The jacket has a fleece liner, water resistant coating and Teflon protection. Interestingly if you’re like me when you hear the term ‘coating’ you think one good wash and its game over. Not so with this one my friends, I’ve washed it a few times and it still is resisting water well. I’ve been caught out in some pretty heavy downpours with nothing getting in, surprisingly good. The Teflon coating protected the jacket against a pretty substantial oil stain I got in from picking up wheels at the local scrapie’s. When I noticed the marks, I thought the jacket would be resigned to the garage forever however on quick wash later and it was as good as new. The quick draw mechanism shouldn’t put you off as the side zips for this make excellent vents for warmer walking.
Construction is of good quality, zips are durable YKK with rubber pull tabs. The sleeves have Velcro adjusters, the adjustment tab is rubber which aids in grip and durability. While stitching is only single in most places it holds well and survives a pull test with ease. Elbows are reinforced for those of those finding themselves in the prone position. The collar is nice and high which aids in protection on blustery days. It doesn’t have a hood which I like, I find hoods annoying and get in the way. In my opinion a good hat is far better than a hood, you can hear everything around you.
If you need an every day jacket that will look good as well as stand up to the elements then this is the one. It’s stain and waterproof coatings make it very versatile and if you’re like me prevents trashing a jacket when you fix a mates car. Lots of pockets make it good for travel where you’re carrying passports, money, cameras etc. Overall, I’m really happy with this jacket and at this price you can’t afford not to try it!
