Eating good and nourishing food while out in the wilds is essential.
Beyond The Beaten Track have been producing ready meals for the outdoors market for many years.
They recently were awarded with the DoE “Recommend Kit “ status for their ease of use and high quality. Each meal is supplied in a tough foil package and they have a long shelf life and do not need to be refrigerated for storage.
This time around I chose their “Sausage Casserole” which includes pork sausages with vegetables in a savoury gravy. These meals typically have a high energy count and this one comes in at 475kcal per pack which should give you a good start for a day’s walking.
These ready meals are produced to be eaten either hot or cold but in my experience they taste much better eaten after heating.
Warming them top is fairly simply just empty the content into a suitable pot and heat on your stove or you can place the unopened foil pouch into boiling water for 9 minutes then carefully open and tuck in.
Both cooking methods produce the same results but the boil-in-the-bag option means that you don’t have to clean up your pot afterwards which is ideal if water is scarce at your campsite leaving your pot ready for brewing up a cuppa.
Appearance and Taste
The appearance at first is not too appealing when you compare it to a traditional home-made sausage casserole as it does look slightly gloppy.
The smell on the other hand really does get the mouth watering. The combination of the smell from the sausages and vegetables really make the meal tempting.
The taste is wonderful.
The sausages are moist, full of flavour and really do hit the spot.
The vegetables in the meal consists of potato, carrot, onion and peas with each retaining their flavour and texture really well which is a rare treat for a ready meal of this sort.
Beyond The Beaten Track’s “sausage casserole” is a very tasty meal packed with loads of energy and is easy to heat up while on the go.
After a tough day of walking this meal really does hit the spot for those wanting something filling to help them to continue to enjoy their adventure and for a very reasonable price.
